Apple Keynote Breakdown
Well, it’s that time of year folks. September 12th, 2017 Apple held it’s annual “Keynote.” This year they are releasing a nice little portfolio of devices.
For iPhone 5s and up and iPad Mini 2 and up, IOS 11 will be available to download on September 19th, 2017. Your existing iPad is getting a nice little update with this software release. They’re making it a little bit more like the Macbook line by placing an interactive dock at the bottom of the screen. Now the dock will make your recent apps available from any screen. This will make it easier to multitask because now you can run 2 programs side by side by accessing your open apps directly from the dock. Now you can also drag and drop files, photos, and text from one app to another.
Now, for those of you with the iPen, it gives you the ability to markup a screenshot or PDF just by touching the pen to the screen. Another feature called “Instant Notes” functions similarly. From the lock screen you can touch the pen to the screen and instantly start writing notes. “Inline Drawing” indexes written words and makes them searchable when writing with the iPen in the notepad and words will automatically wrap around your drawings. There is also a feature similar to what OneNote has that will automatically crop a document as if you were scanning it with a scanner and formats it ideally for instances such as capturing a signature for a contract.
Now Apple is even pushing augmented reality with this new update with a nice little jump start. A few enhancements have been made to the camera functionality. Now you can loop your live photos just like you used to be able to make your video loops with Vine. You can also reverse them after taking them and you also get a “long exposure” feature so you can get those really cool squiggly light effects like you would from a pro setup. They’ve even changed the app store. Now you’ll get app recommendations to keep you informed about what the next best thing is out there in app land. Just like the iPad, now the iPhone has an “App Drawer” for quick access to other apps while messaging so it’s easier to share files.
Remember when Apple bought Lattice over the summer? Well, now we know why. Now they’ve updated Siri to work a bit more naturally using “Machine Learning” and “AI” for ever evolving improvements. Now, in instances such as if you tell Siri to message a friend to tell them that you are on your way, Siri can give them an estimate of how long it will take you to get there!
Apple Music is more like Spotify now because users are now being given their own profiles to use to share playlists with each other. For those of you who have the Apple Home services, they’ve updated the dashboard to be more customizable so that it functions like a remote for all of your household devices with shortcuts. It basically looks just like Android’s “Widget Screen.” Now, just like most Android phones you will be able to set your phone to send an automatic reply while your’e driving.
Okay, now this is really cool. So not only does the new update give you access to your standard maps but now the standard maps function is much more detailed. It actually tells you what lane to get in so you are less likely to miss a turn. If you ask me, this feature is long overdue but now you can even access maps indoors at places like Airports and shopping malls.
This is kind of creepy though. Now, during setup, all you have to do is hold your phone close to your Mac computer, and if you are signed in to iTunes and it will automatically start the process of transferring all of your stuff to your new phone.
Apple TV is being released with a couple of major updates. Now it will be capable of broadcasting 4k HDR quality videos. It is only available for preorder right now but they will start shipping as soon as September 20th.
The Apple Watch Series 3 is also available for pre-order and will hit stores as early as 9/22/2017 and some versions as late as 10/05/2017. The new Apple Watches are water resistant and have Siri built in. They have GPS and there is a WiFi or Cellular option.
iPhone 8 and 8 Plus can be preordered 9/22/2017 while a brand spanking new line is being introduced, the iPhone X. The iPhone X can be preordered 10/27/2017.
